Motorcyclists across the country are often frustrated and even put in harm’s way by stop lights that will not change. Many stop lights are activated by a magnetic loop system that recognizes the presence of a large force. Cars are heavy enough to trigger this type of system and change the light, but not all motorcycles or bikes have the necessary force to cause the light to change. To rectify this situation, many states have modified their laws regarding red lights and motorcyclists.
A few states have now changed their traffic laws to reflect the needs of motorcyclists. These states have made it legal for motorcyclists who find themselves stuck at a red light that will not change to go through the light even if does not change to green. This ruling does not apply to car drivers who should be able to naturally trigger a light that uses this type of technology.
Many car drivers might think that this exception to traffic laws is dangerous for motorcyclists and might also be a risk for them. But motorcyclists are often at even greater risk of being involved in dangerous rear end accidents or other dangerous situations if they must sit at a red light for an extended period of time. Motorcyclists are expected to be aware and only use this exclusion in safe situations.
Though each state has different regulations for traffic laws concerning motorcyclists, this change could be an important trend for motorcyclists across the country. Also, legal devices can be attached to most motorcycles that will trip this type of trigger so that a light will recognize the presence of a motorcyclist.
If you or someone you love has been injured in a motorcycle accident, it is important for the rights of all motorcyclists that you get the justice you deserve.
