| The Audi A6, Success In A Packed Marketplace |
3 Nov |
The Audi A6 is the mid-sized executive offering from Audi set to compete with the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes E Class. In 2005 the A5 was named the World Car of the Year that did much to increase its reputation in this saturated market sector.
Executive saloons are currently some of the most popular cars to be bought annually; this is mainly due to the fact that executives are the some of the few with enough financial stability to buy new prestige cars. So how does the A6 compare to the other cars in its range? Will it be able to match them in terms of performance, comfort and style?
As with much of the Audi range the styling is dominated by the characteristic single panel grill that give Audi cars their distinctive look. Although conservatively styled. It looks good enough to be considered aesthetically pleasing. Other cars in the range can be considered slightly bolder however; the BMW 5 Series is styled in a contemporary way although some commentators are still not convinced by its dynamic curves. For classic beauty, the Mercedes E Class offers timeless elegance that only comes with the Mercedes badge.
Inside the Audi A6 is comfortable and generally a nice place to be, materials feel expensive, and so they should as this is a prestige executive car. The controls are laid out in a logical manner making the A6 an ideal car for long journeys. If you are a techno-junkie however the BMW 5 Series should be the car for you, with a complex ‘iDrive’ system that puts complete control of the driving settings into the hands of the driver.
For British buyers the Audi A6 may no be their first choice, the Jaguar S Type brings retro-styling and the distinctive big cat badge. The Jag also brings the driver a sense of ‘Britishness’ that nationalistic drivers may want to experience. The British manufacturer is somewhat flagging in comparison to its German rivals in terms of quality and reliability though. While the A6 has a feel of quality throughout, the cheap feeling materials used in the S Type’s construction somewhat limit its potential as an executive vehicle.
The Audi A6 also comes in an estate version that larger families may want to consider. This however puts the A6 in direct competition with the Swedish manufacturer Volvo, who have years of experience in the estate car market. The Volvo S80 is a sublime estate that benefits from many years of heritage; its safety features are probably the best in the class, the crash protection system is widely believed to be the most advanced to be ever produced in a road car. This may be the perfect solution for families with safety concerns.
For those who want a bit more sport from their Audi A6 then it may well be worth buying an S6, this does however put the Audi in direct comparison with the king of the sports saloons, the BMW M5. The sportier brother of the A6, the Audi S6 benefits from the ‘Quattro’ system that has made Audi famous for years.
The M5 however is the superior model in this class, with around sixty break horse power less than the BMW, what the Audi lacks in power it makes up with torque, that is; its ability to put its power down on the ground. In terms of performance both the BMW M5 and the Mercedes E63 AMG outstrip the Audi, this however can be balanced in wet weather thank to the exquisite all wheel drive system.
In terms of price the Audi A6 is a startling alternative to the BMW and Mercedes with competitive pricing for entry level models. If price is a real issue however there are cheaper cars on the market that may suffer with quality but make up for it in terms of cost; one such model is the Honda Legend.
Although the Honda is a good car it has somewhat struggled in this competitive market sector where the badge makes all the difference. While the driving position in the Honda is excellent, the rather drab and uninspiring brown interior fails to deliver all that an executive car should.
Overall the A6 is a brilliant car in a sector of the market full of brilliant cars. The fact it was voted the best car in the world a number of years ago is a creditable accolade. There is one problem that the car will have to face in order to compete effectively, that is the badge snobbery that fills the marketplace. Most executives would far prefer to have a BMW or Mercedes to pull up into their parking spot, if Audi can convince the executives to try something different the car will be a complete success.

| What Can Audi Bring To The Party This Year? |
3 Nov |
Audi in 2008 will be hoping to improve on what has been a stellar twelve months. Naturally more premium manufacturers such as Ford and Vauxhall have had the most success in terms of sale lists in dealerships, but out of prestige car ranges, Audi seem to be a top player in what is a lucrative sector of the market. But what has given Audi dealerships such a boost? Is it new styling and engines, or simply an increase of brand recognition? Added to this what can Audi dealerships deliver in the next year?
One of the reasons behind the good fortune of Audi dealerships has been the increase in business customers; for the first time last year, the little manufacturer from Germany managed to overtake its much bigger competitor, BMW. Seemingly companies are now more inclined to use Audis to fill their fleets where as in the past BMW has been the main choice. Once again Ford tops the charts but Audi are gaining and may even enter the top five in the business registrations table.
This has mainly been a result of the popularity of the Audi A4 with business customers. Recently it was voted Europe’s number one executive car. This car was championed by a variety of motoring magazines across the whole of Europe. This popularity over similar models such as the BMW 5 and 6 Series as well as the Mercedes C Class will greatly pleasure Audi dealerships. They will feel as if they are finally getting the recognition they deserve.
So what new developments will be occurring on the forecourts of Audi dealerships this year?
First and foremost is the Audi A3 convertible. Created to rival Peugeot’s 206 and the more pricy Mercedes hard top it will certainly put a smile on the face of many. While it cannot be considered cheap it can be considered value for money, with fabulous styling that give the car looks to die for and performance figures to match some have described it as a thing of beauty. Audi have abandoned past wisdom and instead of installing a hardtop in the car that would make it heavy with poor handling, they have instead opted for a soft top that while keeping the rain out, reduces the weight and does not affect the handling.
This year will also see further releases of the A4 class. Predominantly 2008 will see the release of the sedan and wagon models with new spoilers and styling. This will undoubtedly improve the popularity of this already popular car. There will also be new interior packages for the Audi A4 models this year. Most dealerships will be offering these new options.
The A5 coupe is to be released this year to compete with rival models such as the BMW 3 Series and 6 Series coupes. The car will have a new chassis setup that is hoped to improve handling by placing the engine behind the front wheels rather than Audis of old that had their engines in front of the forward wheel axle. The A6 will also get an upgrade in terms of styling but in effect remains the same car as last year.
Overall Audi dealerships have much to look forward to this year. They will be hoping to build upon what was a good year in 2007, especially in terms of sales. Added to these models there is one that has already caused a great deal of excitement in the motoring world. The R8 brings futuristic styling and performance to the forecourt, although finding these in dealerships will most probably be a Herculean task. Pre-ordering has already rendered any ‘off the forecourt’ buying useless. Other than this of course, dealerships will be hoping to build on the ingresses into the business and family car market.

| Audi R8 |
1 Nov |
Audi R8 – one of the fastest cars. The German automaker, Audi, in 2007 introduced a sports car with mid-engine design for a whopping US$113,150. It started hitting the ramp at the auto shows and other events in 2006 for the first time. The design is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo. It should be noted that Audi owns the Lamborghini Spa completely. The car was originally a racecar. Audi had decided as early as 2005 to use the racecar as a base for a new road car, which was the Audi R8. It also borrows heavily from Audi Le Mans quattro concept car. The Audi R8 was officially launched on the 30th of September 2006 at the Paris Motor Show.
The Audi R8 is fitted with an engine at “mid-ships”. This basically means that the engine is housed between the front and rear axles. The engine has a 4.2 liter capacity, with its DOHC FSI technology producing 420 hp. This dream of a car has an acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. It is the same engine as the one used in Audi RS4.
The car has amazing thrust with the torque going as high as 317 lb-ft. This car achieves a top speed of 187 mph. The Audi R8 also comes equipped with disc brakes, dry-sump lubrication and four-link suspension, Quattro all wheel drive and Servotronic steering. There is also an option between manual six-speed transmission and the “R tronic” (single clutch semi-automatic) transmission. Originally there used to be an additional option of a double clutch gearbox but that option is no longer available.
It weighs approximately 1560 kg. The Audi R8 goes high tech in its suspension capabilities with magneto rheological dampers. These are controlled using a magnetic fluid and which is in turn controlled using an electromagnet. This is used to sense the change in the road conditions and protect the passengers from it, providing the ultimate driving experience.
The R8 closely resembles the Lamborghini Gallordo and deviates from it dramatically only when it comes to styling, design, engine and pricing. The Audi assures its drivers of a totally secure experience ensuring that the Audi R8 is equipped with side impact protection, crash sensors, ESP and an extremely rigid bodyshell in addition to the standard features of airbags, central locking system and the rest.
The Audi R8 also boasts of a Bang & Olufsen stereo system and Carbon Ceramic composite breaks. Add to this the BI-XENON headlights, which uses electronically controlled gas discharge lamps, an Oxygen Silver or Carbon sideblade, a retractable rear spoiler, reinforced bumpers, twin tailpipes and a single frame grille in high gloss black and you have one sweet ride.
The Audi R8 is definitely easy on the eye and one of the sweetest rides present in the market. The inside of the car is just as mouth watering as the outside, with sports seats, a multi-function three-spoke steering wheel, and auto-dimming interior mirrors. But what takes the interior to a whole new level is the Alacantra, a suede-like fabric, which is used for the upholstering. This car is widely touted as the only car that can actually better the Porsche 911 experience, which is considered to be the ultimate in sports cars.
