Rumormill: Audi RS5 headed for the States? 1

Audi RS5 – Click above for a high-res image gallery

It’s been a little while since anything with an RS badge came our way from Ingolstadt, but it if you believe the whispers floating around the Web these days, there may be hope for a U.S.-spec Audi RS5 just yet. Automobile is reporting that the company is seriously mulling bringing the S5′s meaner brother to our neck of the woods.

The Kingdom of Quattro pulled the sheets off of the sinister coupe at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, and our jaws have been on the floor ever since. Under the hood sits a tweaked 4.2-liter V8 with 450 horsepower at the crank. The mill is bolted to none other than the Audi Quattro all-wheel drive system, complete with a new torque-vectoring rear diff.

Automobile hasn’t gone so far as to name a source for the rumors, which leads us to take this one with a Q7-sized grain of salt. Still, if it were true, we may have our sticky paws on an RS5 by summer 2012, right around the same time the refreshed A5 is scheduled to hit the U.S. Keep your fingers crossed and your hopes down.

Motorcycle Communications Systems – Wired Or Wireless? 1
Apr

The question we get asked time after time is “what is the best motorcycle communication systems for bikers?” We always follow this up immediately with another question – “what exactly are you looking for?”

This is because the options are many; from a single rider who just wants to be able to answer his phone whilst riding and perhaps use a Sat Nav, to a group of riders who want to be able to keep in touch with each other whilst on a ride-out.

Throw in there the fact that some riders may want to listen to music and some want all of this, without any wires, and you start to appreciate how complex bike communications can be. There is, therefore, no quick answer to this question. One of the problems we are very much aware of is that it is easy to overload the customer with too much information which can be counter-productive.

Let’s start with some basics. Rider and Pillion would like to be able to communicate with each other on a basic level, such as “Can we stop, I need the loo”. There are plenty of reasonably priced systems available which will do just this, such as the Albrecht Basic Rider to Pillion Intercom which is available with either full-face or open-face headsets. This is a battery operated wired intercom system. However, if you are likely to be travelling at high speed and have to contend with wind noise, this will not be up to the job.

The Starcom Advance System is not only an intercom but a whole entertainment system. Rider and pillion can listen to music, which will mute when they speak to each other. Communication is clear, even at high speeds. The unit, which is the size of a credit card, is wired to the bike’s battery, so no need to worry about batteries running out. Headsets are provided for either full or open face helmets. The digital system allows both rider and pillion to listen to their own music. Mobile phones and GPS devices can be connected either by cable or Bluetooth.

Perhaps you want all of this but do not want any cables coming from your helmet or attaching you to your bike. Bluetooth may then be the option you are looking for. There are numerous Bluetooth devices available now which in the main comprise of a small unit which attaches to the outside of your helmet with either a clip or sticky pad.

Inside the helmet you typically have an earpiece and either a boom mike or a stick on mike for full-face helmets. Interphone is a well-established Bluetooth intercom system which enables you both to connect to another Interphone, i.e. your pillion or another rider, and also to a mobile phone/GPS/MP3 player. It was initially unique in that it allowed the user to connect to more than one other Bluetooth device.

Bluetooth intercoms have now moved on to provide stereo sound and Interphone have brought out their new F4 system which incorporates this feature. Midland also do a range of Bluetooth Intercoms in their BT range and Starcom have their BTGO. The only disadvantage of Bluetooth is the range. For rider to pillion it is ideal, but if you want to use it for rider to rider, you must bear in mind that the range is going to be around 200m, which is fine if you are intending to stay close together.

However, if you are looking for motorcycle communication between a group of riders who may not stay this close together, you perhaps should think about using radios. Again, the options are many; you can each buy a radio, headset and PTT (press to talk) cable and as long as you are all on the same wavelength (usually PMR446), you will be able to communicate with each other.

The range varies depending upon the radio you have (typically the more you can afford to spend the better it will be) but you should usually be able to count on a range of between mile to 2 miles, depending upon conditions. Midland do a great bike-to-bike kit which contains everything one rider needs, if there are 2 of you, you need 2 and if there are 10, you need 10. Nice and simple and affordable.

If you are also looking for other features, such as ability to use mobile phone and listen to music, then you will need to go back to a system such as Starcom. With the Starcom unit wired onto your bike, you will have these features available. You can then add a radio kit to this unit and away you go.

So, to go back to where we started from, you can see that the solution will differ depending upon the requirements. This is very much an area in which you get what you pay for, we get lots of customers telling us about the unit they bought for 20 and it worked fine when they were both stood by their bike testing it but once on the road, they couldn’t hear each other.

Rumormill: Audi working on high-performance Q5? 1

Audi Q5 Custom Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Once upon a time the in-house performance studios of Germany’s finest automakers wouldn’t have anything to do with crossovers and SUVs. But several Mercedes-Benz G55 AMGs and BMW X6 Ms later, Audi‘s quattro GmbH is reportedly looking to join the fold with a pair of super-tuned Q5s.

The reports claim that Audi is preparing an SQ5 and an RSQ5, both backed by versions of the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 found in the latest S4 sedan, offering 333 horsepower in the SQ5 and as much as 408 in the RSQ5. Along with the engine upgrades, we could expect commensurate chassis, brakes and appearance enhancements as well.

For better or worse, these appear to be simple rumors at the time, but we’ll be keeping our eyes open for more info, so stay tuned.

Video: MT performs topless drag race that’s less interesting than it sounds 1

Motor Trend’s topless drag race – Click above to watch the video after the break

“Topless Drag Race! Audi vs BMW vs Infiniti vs Lexus.” That’s the title of Motor Trend‘s latest video. The way we see it, there are three possibilities based on MT’s title of this video… (A) Topless women drag racing cars. (B) A drag race between convertibles. (C) A drag race to determine which convertible stows its top the fastest. Guess which one is the reality.

Sure, it may not be as interesting to watch as either option A or B, but option C is likely of more importance to the average convertible driver who happens to be trapped in an unplanned downpour. Or, alternatively, if that weatherman-speculated downpour never actually comes to fruition… in which case you apparently want to be in the Audi. Not surprising, really, as the Audi is the only one of the quartet that comes with a soft top in lieu of the more fashionable folding hardtop. See for yourself in the video posted after the break.

White Beast: Senner Tuning AG takes on Audi S5 1

Senner Tuning AG Audi S5 – Click above for high-res image gallery

“White Beast” is quite a fitting name for this tuned-up version of the Audi S5 coupe. It isn’t just an aerodynamic package – oh, no – Germany-based Senner Tuning AG has given the S5 a bit more grunt from its 4.2-liter V8 mill, as well as slightly revised suspension geometry and a daub of upgraded interior refinement.

The tuning starts under the hood, where a performance air filter and exhaust system have been added, managing to churn out a claimed additional 25 horsepower and 25 pound-feet of torque, bringing the overall output numbers to 379 and 350, respectively. On top of that, Senner has raised the S5′s electronically limited top speed from the standard 155 miles-per-hour to an Autobahn-friendly 177 mph. What’s more, the four-pipe exhaust now include sport silencers, and we assume the aural grunt from this S5 is quite a treat for the ears. (White Beast, indeed.)

Visually, Senner has added a new front fascia, mimicking that of the Audi RS5, as well as a rear lip spoiler, LED taillamps and a new rear apron. Large 21-inch wheels better fill out the wells, and the suspension has been lowered (40 millimeters in front, 35 in back) to give the car a more aggressive road stance. Inside, a carbon fiber interior trim package has been added, as well as a new tachometer display screen.

The cost of the White Beast tuning kit? €18,990 (about $25,500 USD). Click through the post to read the full press release and have a look for yourself in the gallery below.

Turning an Audi A1 into an S1 – Click above for high-res image gallery. Follow the jump to watch video.

Proficiency is a wonderful thing to see in any category – we can even watch a great lawn bowler do his thing for a minute or two. So, when it’s something closer to our interests, like Audis and Photoshopping, we can hang in a little longer. What you see here isn’t an Audi S1 – just an A1 made to look like one. Highly sped up, it takes a few minutes to make this happen. It will probably take Audi a little longer, but make no mistake, we hope they’re watching. Follow the jump to watch the transformation unfold on video.

2010 Audi TT-S – Click above for high-res image gallery

Starting April 9, the world will get its first peek at next year’s Audi TT at AMI Lepzig. So far, details are iffy on exactly what we can expect from the 2011 coupe and roadster, but the car is due for a mild facelift. We’re guessing new front and rear fascias and a revised wheel program are likely to find their way into the soup de jour.

While the reworked TT models will be the highlight of the show, Audi has also promised to bring along a slew of its other products. Nestled among the 25 production models and two show cars will be the freshly-minted A1 compact as well as at least one of the e-Tron show cars. AMI Lepzig will run from April 9-18. Follow the jump for the press release.
