2010 Audi R15 plus – click above to enlarge

Testing for the 24 Hours of Le Mans doesn’t begin until mid-June, but that doesn’t mean that Audi isn’t already hard at work bettering the chances of their diesel-powered R15 TDI racer.

Thanks to a belated rule change for the LMP1 class designed to hamper the dominance of diesel-powered vehicles, Le Mans rulemakers have mandated smaller-diameter air restrictors and curbed supercharger pressure in an effort to level the playing field. According to Audi, those alterations have made the German automaker prioritize aerodynamics and downforce even more than normal.

The result? Audi boffins have completely re-engineered the front-end of the car, so much so that the new split nose racer has been designated “R15 plus.” The updated LMP1 entrant has already begun testing its new aerodynamics, revised cooling and fuel tank systems in the United States, and further testing in Europe will follow before the legendary French enduro. Audi says that the 5.5-liter engine continues to crank out upwards of 590 horsepower. Can’t remember what last year’s R15 look like? Compare and contrast by clicking here. Official press release after the jump.

Motorcycle Exhausts – All the Things You Need to Know About Motorcycle Exhausts 4
Apr

A normal engine will definitely produce a noise, even the new technology combustible engines. Motorcycle exhausts can help minimize the amount of this noise significantly. Many exhaust parts developed today are expected to deliver a power packed performance. They can also steer the fumes from the engine. Generally, a motorbike exhaust is designed for a specific motorbike model. The materials used for manufacturing fume parts range from metal to carbon fiber.

What You May Not Know?

Motorbike vaporizer is sold as individual parts. However, it still needs to be attached to a system with mufflers, cylinder heads, turbochargers, catalytic converters and drag pipes. Compared to some other parts, the bike’s fumes can cause more problems on the entire smoke expelling scheme.

Basically, the smoke expelling parts will experience overheating that will cause bluing effect on the pipes’ tips. This is why all the components in the entire fume expelling structure should work together to keep the engine cool, guide the smoke away from the engine and lower the noise level.

Which Should you Choose: Two in one Cylinder or 4 tube Fume System?

It is recommended that the fume engine should be placed higher up on the bike. This is to prevent engine scraping, especially when a racer turns. A motorcycle exhaust part consists of one of these two fume types: the twin cylinder with separate smoke parts and 4 cylinder twin smoke expelling method. The former one is also known as two in one cylinder as it guides smoky gases into only a single section. For larger motorcycles, the 4 tube system is usually encouraged to be utilized as it is a full method exhaust.

What are the Regulations Involved in using Exhaust System?

In the United States, there are laws that limit the noise level of a motorbike. The fines generally vary from state to state. The purpose of these laws is to keep large bikes from roaring and making too much noise on the neighborhoods, and to keep each neighborhood peaceful and pollution free.

Nobody knows Audis like Mattias Ekström. The Swedish driver has been campaigning four-ringed racing machines in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters series (DTM, Germany’s touring car championship) for the past nine years, and has taken the title twice. Who better, then, to put the latest performance Audi through its paces?

Having come up through the touring car ladder, Ekström may know tin-tops, but open cockpits are a novelty for him. The Audi R8 Spyder, with its 5.2-liter V10 engine running at full bore, sounds – and looks – like a good place to start. Follow the jump to see Ekström and the R8 do the sideways thing through an underground parking lot, complete with dub-tastic dialogue. Thanks for the tip, Braun!

Thanks to the Volkswagen Group’s strategy to be the leading player in the alternative-powertrain market within the next decade, Audi has announced a rapid expansion of hybrid and electric vehicles over the next few years. The German automaker wants to improve efficiency of its internal combustion engines (both gasoline and diesel) by 30 percent – and it wants five percent of the brand’s model line to be electric. “In the future, our customers will be able to choose from an increasingly broad range of driveline technologies,” said Audi CEO Rupert Stadler.
