Technology alert: The dipstick’s demise is blamed on dilatory drivers 22

The practice of opening the hood at every fuel stop used to be routine. With an oil-soaked rag in hand, the worker reached over and pulled out the hot metal dipstick, and after a quick cleaning swipe, the dipstick was plunged back into its tube and pushed down into the sump of scalding oil. Withdrawn again, a tell-tale black film in the middle of the scored lines marked the oil level very accurately.

Today, many late model vehicles are running sans oil dipstick. Electronic oil level senders have replaced the metal rod – to the bafflement and frustration of the few remaining hands-on enthusiasts everywhere.

In an effort to find out who exactly is responsible for the dipstick-abolishing movement, Autoblog contacted Audi, BMW and Porsche – three respected German automakers who have embraced the technology for several years. All three gave us the same answer. Contrary to Internet rumors, the elimination of an inexpensive metal rod is not a cost-cutting measure, nor is it an environmental issue (word on the web said each check of a dipstick introduced ounces of polluting dirty oil into the ecosystem).

Quite frankly, the automakers point out that we simply don’t need dipsticks anymore. Why. Because owners don’t use them. While they don’t specifically say it, those who engineer and assemble our new cars (and guarantee new vehicle warranties) are much more comfortable knowing that a silicon chip is monitoring the oil level – not a consumer who hasn’t checked tire pressures (or even opened the hood) since the last time the Vikings won the Super Bowl.

Today’s comatose driver expects everything to be automated – and it is. Look no further than the myriad of digitized warning lights on the dashboard when the key is turned (um… make that the start button). Don’t blame the automakers for the disappearance of the dipstick – blame the public at large.

Spy Shots: Audi R8 ClubSport heads to the ‘Ring 21

Within the next two years, Audi plans to have five different variants of the R8 in production: V8- and V10-powered coupes and convertibles, and one harder-core variant tuned to play as well on the track as it does on the road. This newest, lightweight model – likely carrying either a ClubSport (CS) or GT badge – has been undergoing testing in Germany this week, and beyond the sinister matte-black paint scheme (with matching fuel door), there are a few choice modifications to the body to set it apart from its standard siblings.

The front fascia has been lowered slightly with the addition of a new splitter and reshaped winglets, while out back you’ll notice the larger, round exhaust outlets, restyled rear bumper with new air outlets aft of the wheels and that shapely fixed rear wing. The rolling stock appears to have grown a bit and larger carbon ceramic brakes are fitted at all four corners.

It’s likely that Audi is using a fair amount of carbon fiber bodywork to bring the ClubSport’s curbweight down by a couple hundred pounds, and judging by the side-sill intakes, a V10 – possibly mated to a new dual-clutch gearbox – remains mounted amidships. Given the current pace of development, we’d suspect Audi plans to unveil its latest R8 project this year, possibly at the Paris Motor Show in the fall.

Is Audi an overrated automotive manufactuer? 19

Is this true? Please I want to hear from people who can actually back this up with facts – mechanics and people who actually know about the engineering of these cars. My friend has an Audi TT and at first she was like…’oh this is the best car ever!’ and now she wishes she never bought it,as it has proved to be very unreliable and cash draining.

I truly believe that VW, Audi and BMW build strong powerful cars, but it would appear they are high also maintainence and have a fair share or problems. I have also never heard of Audi winning awards for ‘car of the year’, simple because they do not have a fantastic track record for reliablilty and customer service.

Now listen guys I would like to hear unbiased opinions, not just from audi owners who are trying to defend the car they perhaps now wished they hadn’t forked out so much money on.

Does your Audi have a panel attached to the underside of the back seat to stop metal touching the battery? 19

I have already asked a similar question but what I really want to know is if you have an audi, and the battery is housed underneath the rear passenger seat does the actual seat have a protective panel or cover attached to the underside of the seat to stop the metalwork of the seat touching the terminals of the battery. If you do have a battery housed underneath the seat I am interested to know if there is a protective panel or not and also what sort of model audi do you have?
