1995 Audi A6 Front Wheel Bearing Replacement 6

This was a big job. The video was shot over a two day period. The whole job took us about 4 hours total to complete. The shop I called said it would cost $440. The bearing was less then $100 with shipping. I never tried to weld a bearing race in order to remove it. It works perfectly.

Thanks for the comment! I don’t plan on doing anymore of these!

If you’re planning on doing more than one of these, then a proper Front Wheel Bearing Puller Remover/Installer Tool is well worth the money (I got one for about $120). It saves a huge amount of time and there is no risk of damage to the new bearing. I still like the trick you did with the welder though …

Thanks for the comment. I actually tried using an old bearing exactly as use suggested. The old bearing cracked and the one in the hub did not budge!

I like the wheel hub trick. Thats Slick, however I am not sure about the welding. Hub Shark or the Hub tamer will work. If not I would use and old bearing that will just fitt with some good Steel Washers and a High quality bolt and nut to pull it though.

Thanks for the comment. Yeah, my brother got it right… The welder has since been retired and a new modern MIG welder is in it’s place.

I really like your brother’s sense of humor..when asked @ 4:24 what he would call it (old Sears ac welder) and without hesitation he replied “a waste of electricity” I almost shat myself! The cool thing is you guys got it to do the job like a modern mig welder so in the end that old welder had a moment of glory. Thanks for making & sharing your video on how you got it done w/out a press. Cheers!

Good advice. Thanks for the comment.

Don’t have a welder or want to risk metallurgical damage nor have a shop press or experience to improvise? Here’s another way. Buy your bearings @ ADVANCE AUTO and ask for the FREE Slide hammer & Front end loaner kits. Go to HARBOR FREIGHT outlet or online & buy the FWD front wheel drive bearing adapter kit for $40 on sale ($80 regular).
You will slap out the hub, pull the race off the hub, press out old & press in new bearing + seals & press the hub back in all done on car in half book time.

Its very cool how all that worked out. I dont know whats up with the guy saying ghetto? Some people just dont understand people dont and cant get the none ghetto tools to do these jobs. Shoot, I wish I had a place and money for a 20 tone press, you know.

But I delt with this last weekend. Moms car needed new cv shafts, front bearings and seals. People keeped saying it was going to be easy and quick. I really wish I knew what they were smoking, lol. Not easy. 1 day, 1 cv. same the next day.

  10. edzgarage Says:

No “ghetto” here, just good old fashion ingenuity. Thanks for the comment!

  11. constantlydoped Says:

That’s a ‘seriously ghetto’ repair method!

  12. edzgarage Says:

Yeah, I let them talk. Thanks!

  13. 500passwords Says:

the other people commenting on this trick must work for a shop press company or something, id keep listening to your brother. 5 stars

  14. edzgarage Says:

Worked like a charm! I never would have tried it myself. My brother is a good mechanic and has been one for 25 years.

  15. 500passwords Says:

very cool trick , im no mechanic , but i know a little about welding . when that weld cools it shrinks and pulls bearing race loose with it , pretty slick

  16. edzgarage Says:

Thanks for the comments. The guy helping me has 20 years experience with heavy machinery repair and knew what he was doing. He has never had a bearing fail with his method. Brass hammer would have been a better choice.

  17. lauratwo16 Says:

Good tip on welding to shrink it but an OTC Hubtamer will do this job complete in about 20 minutes with knuckle on the car! Tool is under $300 and will do just about any car with pressed bearings. You gotta find some brass drifts & throw away that ball peen hammer! No tapping hub in without supporting inner race! Sorry but this is painful to watch for top level mechanics.
    Peace.

  18. edzgarage Says:

    To each his own.

  19. celicagti16 Says:

screw that man, my garage said he would charge me £50 to replace my bearing.i think i will take it 2 him after seeing this lol

  20. Decamber Says:

Thanks for the video. This was an interesting way of replacing a wheel bearing and it is certainly handy in case you do not have access to a press. However, I would not recommend this method since it is quite easy to destroy the bearing. Believe me – I have destroyed three bearings myself and that is not fun when a wheel bearing costs around $100.

  21. edzgarage Says:

Probably wont last much past another 100k like all the others. Thanks for your concern!

  22. jamie211983 Says:

your new bearing wont last long after you hammered it like that ….!!!
